POLICE are investigating the assault of a man at a police station in Port Moresby after the attack was captured on video and went viral on social media.
The man, who is a suspect in two sexual assault cases, was stripped naked in the Badili police station cells last Wednesday after being beaten up outside the station, allegedly by relatives of a victim.
He was accused of sexually assaulting two women, whom he had made videos with, which were circulated on social media and dubbed the “kaikai belt” videos.
Officer in charge of the police taskforce Insp Robert Wane confirmed that his unit had interviewed the suspect Alex Buka, 21, from Jiwaka on Friday, after videos and pictures of his assault went viral on Facebook.
“We are working to identify the officers allegedly involved.
“Once we have identified them, we will be bringing them in for interviews and then appropriate charges will be laid,” Insp Wane said.
Buka was charged with two counts of aggravated rape and seven counts of sexual penetration.
According to his lawyer Emmanuel Isaac, Buka denied the allegations saying “everything was done with the consent of the complainants.”
“The complainants are two of the three female participants in the ‘kaikai belt’ challenge,” Isaac said.
“The allegations made by the complainants against my client are that he kidnapped and raped them and forced them to do the ‘kaikai belt’ series with him.”
A police officer was suspended by Metropolitan Commander Perou N’dranou when the videos of Buka’s assault surfaced on social media.
Policemen on duty then, however, denied any impropriety on their part and blamed disgruntled civilians.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Anthony Wagambie Jr said the incident at the station was being investigated.
Wagambie said those responsible including police officers, the victims and the relatives of the victims or others who have assaulted the Buka would be charged.
