NCD police sets up operational zones to combat rise in crime

THE National Capital District command has been divided into three operational zones to combat the increasing crime rate in the city, Police Commissioner Gari Baki said on Friday.
Baki said the NCD metropolitan policing project was the initiative of the Commander for NCD and Central assistant commissioner Donald Yamasombi, in addressing crime in the city. NCD has three electorates – Moresby South, Moresby North-East and Moresby North West.
Baki said the electorates had been divided into zones to ensure manpower and resources were identified and allocated to these newly demarcated police operational boundaries to keep law and order.
“There are total of nine suburban police stations: Port Moresby, Badili, Hohola, Gerehu, Waigani, Boroko, Gordon, 6-Mile and Jackson Airport,” he said.
Zone one would comprise of Port Moresby, Badili and Hohola while zone two include Gerehu, Waigani and Boroko, and zone three would have Gordon, 6-Mile and Jackson Airport.
Baki said their intention was to divide manpower and resources and decentralise the National Capital District operational command in three manageable boundaries to enhance police visibility and response time to crime and emergencies.
“Port Moresby is the biggest and busiest metropolitan command within the country and it is estimated to be inhabited by over a million residents and it requires an active police response,” he said.
