NCD police to issue traffic fines to disobedient drivers

TRAFFIC fines will be issued to drivers who continue to disregard traffic and road rules as police clamp down on traffic violations in the city.
As part of their efforts to clean up the roads and streets of irritating, ill-mannered and inconsiderate drivers, National Capital District police are promoting road safety and have outlined traffic offences and fines they are implementing in Port Moresby.
Met Supt Perou N’dranou reminded drivers and vehicle owners of the fines they would face should they breach simple traffic rules.
“We will be targeting unroadworthy vehicles, unlicensed drivers, unregistered and uninsured vehicles, and overloading of passengers.
“We will be targeting those that running the orange and red lights at the traffic lights, unauthorised number plates, unauthorised lights attached to vehicles and unauthorised parking and bus stops,” he said.
“If a driver is convicted, the conviction could lead to a fine of K2,500.

  •  FAILING to comply with a traffic control sign will see an infringement fine of K500;
  •  DRIVING a motor vehicle with incorrect number plate, will be a fine of K500;
  •  DRIVING, or permitting a person to drive a truck while a person is standing – a fine of K500; and,
  •  STANDING on a truck while it is being driven – fine of K300.
    “When a vehicle owner disregards the rule, the maximum penalty is K1,500 fine.
    “For a vehicle displaying non-complying lights, the fine is K750 and if convicted, there will be a fine of K4,000.”
