NCD won the cricket gold medal at the PNG Games in Kimbe over the weekend.
The defending champions won all their T20 matches against four other participating provinces: Milne Bay, Madang, hosts West New Britain and Southern Highlands.
Milne Bay won silver while Madang settled for bronze. Cricket did not have any finals but medals were given based on the standings which saw West New Britain and Southern Highlands miss out.
Tournament director Rarua Dikana said NCD had came in as favourites and finished off on a high note.
“NCD were the most experienced side and lived up to their name. They dominated the tournament while Milne Bay and Madang were good,” Dikana said.
“The surprised package for this games was Southern Highlands and we saw some good cricket from them.
“The cricket competition ran smoothly, the weather was good to us despite some delays.
“The PNG Games is a talent identification opportunity. We were impressed with the talent that was showcased during the PNG Games.
“Madang’s skipper was good, he batted well during the games. Milne Bay had a couple of good players as well.
“Southern Highlands province as well had some good players, being a remote province, we were impressed with the talent they displayed,” Dikana said.
Dikana also commended the cricket pitch at the Kimbe Secondary School.
“The host organising committee did well in preparing the pitch and we brought some equipment up from Port Moresby.
“This is a good facility and the local cricket association will be happy with this facility and it is up to them to put into use.”
