THE National Capital District schools rugby union competition kicked off on Saturday at the Bava Park.
Pilot schools of the Pacific in Union Rugby4schools programme finally took off after 10 weeks at the training paddocks.
The competition followed on from the previous weeks St Josephs International Catholic College’s rugby festival which created a lot of interest from schools.
First matches played in the five-week competition were a nail-biter in the boy’s Under-14 division between Boroko Primary School  and Port Moresby Grammer, and their Under-17 teams.
Grammer did not take long in the opening minutes to stamp themselves as favourites to run in their first try, but Boroko eventually replied to lock the match by halftime 5-5.
A try a piece and some very tight defence towards the end had parents and both camps on their feet, but there wasn’t a winner at the end, score 10-10.
The Under-17s locked their match up too at 7-7.
In the other matches, Salvation Army School  handed St Joseph’s their first loss 10-5 in the other Under-17 match, while the St Joey girls dealt Grammer a 15-5 loss.
Caritas Girls Technical Secondary School just managed to scrape home over Port Moresby International School (POMIS) 12-10, after converting one of their two tries in the other Under-17 girls’ fixture.
The competition continues this Saturday.
