NATIONAL Capital District education officers are visiting  all schools in Port Moresby to talk to students about the effects of inter-school fighting.

The initiative is led by Superintendent Operations Stephen Lapan and assisted by officials and standard officers from the NCD education office.

The District Education Board will apply zero tolerance on students involved in inter-school fighting by suspending  the students.

Lapan said the team visited Marianville Secondary School, Koiari Park High School and St Charles Lwanga Secondary School.

“Students suspended will not seek further education in any National Capital District school but transfer to other provinces,” he said.

“School violence is a violation of a child’s right to go to school where they learn in a safe and protected environment and stops children from going to school.

“It poses a real threat to the achievement of international goals such as the Millennium Development Goals and the Education for All (EFA) objectives.

“The visit would also impress on students to develop good characters through consistently doing right things in school, making right choices in difficult situations and making right choices over time.

“The aim of addressing school violence is to stop or minimise it from happening in the first place.

“In the long run it will restore friendly inter-school relations and eradicate school fights.”
