NCD teachers face housing problems
The National, Thursday 29th of November, 2012
MANY teachers in the National Capital District have left teaching or switched to other schools because of the shortage of housing in secondary schools, a principal says
Sam Lora said Gordon Secondary School was one of those schools that faced a critical shortage of committed and qualified teachers who left because of lack of housing.
Lora made the comment when receiving a cheque for K10,000 from Moresby Northeast MP Labi Amaiu to do an architectural design for teachers’ accommodation.
He said many of his teachers had left the school because they did not have any accommodation.
He said the Department of Education did not provide accommodation and housing was not a condition for teachers so they are left to look for their own accommodation.
“Our plan now is to secure an architect to design a building for teachers’ accommodation,” Lora said.
He said the accommodation would cater for 80% of teachers who
lived in settlements.
Moresby Northeast administrator Eremuge Kelage presented the cheque on Monday.
Kelage said Gordon Secondary was one of the oldest schools in the electorate and had produced some prominent leaders of the
country.
“It is our priority to look at the needs of the schools such as classrooms, computer laboratory, library, teachers’ houses, administration building and other facilities,” Kelage
said.
Lora said the money would be used to engage an architect to design teachers house before they sought funds to build the accommodation at the cost of about K200,000.
