THE Education Department and the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) has signed a memorandum of agreement for the transfer of operational powers relating to education services in the city.
Speaking during the signing of the MoA, Minister for Education Nick Kuman said NCDC was one of the few provinces where education powers had not been decentralised.
He said it was important that such powers were decentralised to ensure better education outcomes were achieved.
He told The National that apart from NCD, East Sepik, Eastern Highlands, Madang and Gulf had decentralised education powers.
“I’ve noticed that provinces where their provincial governments were putting a lot of effort in education, those provinces have been doing well,” Kuman said.
He said education was one of the priority areas of the Government and decentralisation of powers to provincial governments was the Government’s goals.
“When we invest in education, we know that an educated population develops the country.”
Kuman said the Education department would be responsible only for quality control, standards and the curriculum to ensure quality education was achieved.
