NCDC embarks on recycle campaign

NATIONAL Capital District Commission waste management division manager Joshua Sam is appealing to Port Moresby residents to learn how to recycle waste and separate recyclable rubbish.
Introducing new litter bins for the city at City Hall yesterday, Sam said: “We are running out of landfill space so as much as possible we are trying to reduce the amount of waste dumped at Baruni Dump.”
Sam said recycling would be made possible as one of the two types of bins introduced has two compartments – one for the recyclables and the other rubbish.
“We are trying to pursue recycling very aggressively this year and this will be one of our strategies to doing it,” he said.
“As part of our educational awareness on the two litter bins, we will let the public know what kind of rubbish goes in each compartment.”
He said they would like to organise the bins and show how to properly dispose of rubbish in the bins so the waste division could take it to the recycling centres.
The recyclables would be collected, packaged and shipped overseas to industries that were converting them into usable items, Sam said.
