Need for more work highlighted

PAPUA New Guinea has a long way to go in beefing up its cyber security and training of PNG nationals in using technology is a need.
This is according to Ruswin Integrated Solutions general manager Kevin Buckby when The National asked about the country’s capacity in online security and the challenges involved.
Buckby said the current challenges for security providers was finding locals who were technically sound when recruiting.
“Cyber security because there has been some attacks in PNG, it is something that a lot of PNG companies are active in protecting themselves but there is still a long way to go,” he said.
“But for PNG businesses, there is quite a way through and, for example, identity theft is not something that is overly addressed but we’ll eventually get there.
“One of the hard problems here is getting skilled labour.
“There really are not enough technical schools to get people to a level.
“Don Bosco does amazing work but they can only go so far.
“They’re enough to be feeding the country for what it requires and there’s not enough that’s doing high-level training for staff.
“In Australia, when you advertise for people who have technical skills in electronics, there is a lot of people out there but here, in PNG, when you are after people who have electronic skills, it’s hard to get trained people.”
When speaking on the company’s own training initiatives and outlook, Buckby said: “We do spend a lot of time on training.
“This is actually why experts are meant to be here and that’s just to train nationals and get them to a level and so we do that.
“We will continue to move in the direction if training.
“Two of our national staffs were just promoted to managers.
“We would like to see within the business where all of our managers there are nationals.
“We are also looking at drones and technology which is the backbone of everything at the moment.
“Within the CCTV (closed circuit television), there’s artificial intelligence (AI) now that’s self-learning and can give you warnings when something is different within the environment.
“Technology is being used more and more in PNG now and Ruswin is at the forefront.”
