Need for national monitoring office in PNG

PAPUA New Guinea needs a national content monitoring office like in the United Kingdom, it has been proposed.
During a panel discussion, it was proposed that the national content policy proposed by the Government must be included before the signing of the Papua LNG gas agreement next month.
Chief executive officer of the Manufacturing Council of Papua New Guinea Chey Scovell said enforcing local content was not hard when Papua New Guinea would provide everything including food and water.
He said in previous projects, food, water, prefabricated houses, labour and even uniforms were brought in from overseas.
“I find it hard (to understand) with developers saying they want to import them even when the prices are higher,” he said.
The panel included Petroleum department secretary Lohial Nuau, Mineral Resource Development Company managing director Augustine Mano and gas project coordination office director Peter Koim.
Mano said when operators were given exemptions, a decision made at the higher level, it was difficult to get the local content right.
The summit brings together senior government officials and major industry players to discuss current energy projects and the future strategies for expansion.
As the dedicated event for oil, gas and power for PNG, this is your opportunity to tap into exciting business opportunities.
