MANY unfortunate people in the city have been given a chance to improve their life skills – thanks to certain charity groups.

Talleres De Nazareth, a Catholic charity training centre that teaches men and women basic life principles to stay fit and healthy while providing for the family, is an example.

The centre, opened in 2009, and teaches basic sewing and cooking to people from all walks of life.

Sister-in-charge, Elma Tuzon said the centre was teaching prisoners basic cooking, including baking, and sewing last year and hoped to continue this year.

She said she was happy that after that programme prisoners were able to bake cakes and prepare basic healthy meals for their families using simple ingredients.

“I am happy that the centre has touched the lives of these people in many ways,” she said.

Prisoners, who had no education and had turned to crime to sustain their families, were given a second chance in life to be able to go into informal business to support their families.

“Most of these mothers now sew and cook for a living,” Tuzon said.

The training centre now in partnership with Gini Goada will restart at the end of this month. Those  outside the Gini Goada Foundation can pay K30  a month for the training.
