The Netball PNG open selection trials are set for this weekend at the Sir John Guise Indoor Complex in Port Moresby.
The selection trials will be conducted by Brisbane-based high performance coach Christina Carswell who was the recent head coach of the national team to the Mini Pacific Games in Vanuatu.
She will be assisted by a core group of local emerging coaches.
According to Netball PNG’s high performance coordinator Mona-lisa Leka, there is high interest to attend these trials by elite players from the country and abroad and they are hoping that it will be competitive to allow the selection panel to select a strong 20-member training squad.
The two-day programme will commence at 8am and end at 4pm daily.
A quad will be selected and announced early next week which will see the team start its training programme in lead up to the Oceania qualifiers in April.
The final 12-member team will be selected prior to the team’s departure. Leka said the Netball PNG board would shortly be advertising positions for the management team which will also be appointed next month to prepare and take charge of the team.
The board is also using this event to identify emerging coaches who would be included in Netball PNG’s coaching development programme.
The pathway programme is expected to roll out in April with support from Oceania Netball and Netball New Zealand.
This coaching programme will be rolled out to the netball associations throughout the country in 2018.
