THE National AIDS Council (NAC) has allocated K50,000 to the National Netball Umpires Committee to advocate against HIV/AIDS in the community.
NAC deputy director Tony Lupiwa, and advocacy and social mobilisation manager Valentine Tangoh handed over K10,000 to committee president Eileen Simet and umpire adviser Helen Lawrence to drive the campaign against the killer disease during the National Netball Championships in Goroka.
An NAC team will also be in Goroka during the championships to hand over the role to the committee to deliver awareness among women and girls.
Lupiwa said: “We came on board to support the national umpires believing that these group of women can deliver the message through netball, as it involves a lot of females.
“We feel that HIV/AIDS is on the rise again and we need to control it with preventative measures and protect women from the disease.
“We are confident that this partnership will involve all the women in PNG and not only those in the National Capital District.”
Simet and Lawrence said they were grateful to be involved in advocating against HIV/AIDS among women and girls in netball.
“This sponsorship is timely as the national championships are a perfect avenue to deliver messages about the disease,” Simet said.
“The funding will give national umpires confidence in their preparations and awareness at the championships.”
