New bishop for Goroka diocese

A long-serving Catholic priest was ordained as the new bishop of Goroka Catholic diocese last Saturday.
Fr Valentine Gryk, 64, from Poland in Europe was ordained by the representative of Pope of Rome to PNG and Solomon Island Apostolic Nuncio Fermin Emilio Sosa Rodriques and Cardinal John Ribat at Kefamo Catholic Mission near Goroka town in Eastern Highlands.
Pope Francis announced through the Apostolic Nuncio Fermin Emilio Sosa Rodriques in February this year that Fr Valentine Gryk became the bishop elect for the Catholic Diocese of Goroka.
On May 7, 2022, the episcopal ordination and installation were formalised at the Cathedral in Kefamo.
The presence of visitors and traditional dancers, priests, bishops including Cardinal Sir John Ribat of Port Moresby and the Apostolic Nuncio made the event very special. Bishop Gryk was not new to the diocese of Goroka.
He arrived in PNG from Poland in the 80s and worked in Sepik, Goroka, Mt Hagen and Wabag until his elevation to bishop.
His ordination and appointment to Goroka diocese made him the seventh bishop of Goroka.
Former bishops included Bernard Schilling, John Cohill, Raymond Cesar, Michael Marai, Francesco Sarego and Darius Kaluza.
