EAST New Britain will be prone to security threats, especially law and order issues with the New Britain Highway connecting the province to West New Britain, an official says.

Deputy provincial administrator coordination and implementation, Edward Lamur said that at a national security policy consultation workshop for the New Guinea Islands region in Kokopo last week.

Lamur said ENB was prone to security threats that not only concerned national security but economic, environment and natural disasters.

The highway under construction will link the two provinces and will open up trade, but Lamur said ENB did not rule out rise in law and order.

“At this juncture, I would like to thank the department of foreign affairs and immigration, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and the National Executive Council to bring this workshop to ENB so we are able to make our views known towards the formulating of the National Security Policy (NSP),” Lamur said.

He said other threats were food security and cash crops in light of pest incursions and the low commodity prices for copra and cocoa.

“ENB wants to diversify crops and the Government has come up with programme interventions to address this.”
