THE Government’s fibre optic cable installation to improve internet service in the country reached Madang yesterday.
The Kumul submarine fibre optic cable project took exactly one month to run its cable from Port Moresby to Madang. The cable runs from Port Moresby through Alotau, Popondetta, Lae then Madang.
Madang Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Kevin Murray said the fibre optic cable installation was a very important development in the province and Madang people and businesses were fortunate to have it.
Murray said the link would make internet communication easier and convenient for schools, individuals, families and businesses.
A PNG DataCo source said it was a Government initiative captured under the Government’s Alotau Accord, with work beginning in 2015.
The source said Highlands provinces were covered and coastal areas would be fully completed by next March.
He said the Government stepped in with the project to reduce internet costs.
Murray said Madang was fortunate to be benefiting from this project because it was an academic town with schools, colleges and a university.
