The centre was funded by the Japanese government under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) in 2012 to cater for the growing number of pupils in the surrounding communities.

A total of K210,721 was allocated for the construction. The building was to provide a much better environment for the teachers, 360 students and thousands of community members.

The new building consists of four classrooms and will house 40 pre-schoolers, 33 elementary one pupils, 13 elementary two pupils and a teacher’s room.

Iwasaki said he was happy to be at the centre’s opening and expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Japanese government to those who contributed towards the completion of the classrooms.

“We must all realise the importance of education as our right and as the way forward for development and betterment of our community and the country,” he said.

Before the new classroom, classes were held in front of a tucker shop in the settlement but were later moved into the Caritas area.
