New complex meets with fire safety rules, says Roo

The PNG Fire Service says a new multi-million kina complex built to accommodate Air Niugini staff in Port Moresby has met all fire safety requirements.
Acting Chief Fire Officer Bill Roo yesterday told The National that the 138-room residential complex was inspected by PNG Fire Service late last month.
“My officers did an inspection last year, May 24. Recent inspection was done on March 22 this year,” he said.
“There was a conditional certificate that was issued last year. My officers found they complied with the fire requirements (March 22) so they have recommended to the Building Board for the issuing of a certificate for occupancy. That’s for the apartment only.
“The emergency management plan (EMP) for the apartment can come later because people have to move in and then the management has to formulate a plan and participate in how they can respond to emergencies.
“The adjoining building on the other side, which houses the lobby, kitchen and restaurant, requires an automatic fire suppression system and that has not been complied with but we know that Air Niugini management has taken heed of that to put in and everything will be ok.”
