A VISIT to Majestic Seafood’s new K85million tuna processing facility at Malahang in Lae, Morobe, revealed that the facility will significantly minimise its waste.

This is because the facility comes complete with a boiler plant that will use discarded fish bones and heads to manufacture fish oil, which is valuable for its pharmaceutical qualities.

Waste from there will be further processed to produce fish feed which has high commercial value as feed for farm animals.

Engineering manager Edwin Mendoza said the Malahang cannery boasts the most advanced waste disposal management system.

Mendoza said waste from the processing plant goes through a vigorous water treatment regime that is closely monitored by a computerised system.

He added that water released from the treatment wells would be safe and odorless.

At optimal production the multi-million kina facility would employ 2,000 workers and process 350 tonnes of fresh tuna making it the largest in the country.

The facility is expected to be officially commissioned for operation next month by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill.
