New five-storey malaria centre opens

PEOPLE will be able to get checked and treated quickly for malaria at a new centre in Port Moresby – thanks to the Chinese government.
Speaking at the opening of a five-storey malaria centre at Hohola, in Port Moresby, on Friday, Health Secretary Pascoe Kase said the formal opening would be done in November.
“Today we take this opportunity to unveil the project for the eradication of malaria in PNG,” he said. “Our country has been struggling with malaria cases for a very long time, it is our plan to work with the Government as well with our friends from the Chinese government to fight the elimination of malaria.
“Malaria is one of the killers in many countries while the health department throughout the world and the Asia-Pacific region is now talking to eradicate malaria. As for us PNG, we are taking this step forward.”
Kase said it was a small initiative that was being undertaken with some help from global funds, the PNG government as well as the Chinese government “through which we started a project at Kiriwina Island about mass drug administration with the provincial health authority”.
He said they had some positive feedbacks of the project and the technical team of the department would release the results very shortly.
