New gear a boost for city boxers
The National, Tuesday March 25th, 2014
MOTOR Vehicle Insurance Ltd, in recognition of youth development in sports, handed over boxing equipment worth K6,800 to the Socay Boxing Club, in Hohola, Port Moresby, last Friday.
It was sponsorship from company chief executive officer Joe Wemin, who delivered the equipment to the club.
Wemin said he was proud to support Socay Boxing Club as it not only involved and occupied youths from Hohola but throughout the National Capital District.
He said the company had an obligation to provide to the community and this was one way to support sports to occupy unemployed youths and school children to keep them away from illicit drugs like marijuana and home-brew.
This is the first sponsorship for the community orientated club headed by former Papua New Guinea amateur champion Kevin Baki, who is now the coach and trainer.
The equipment included boxing gloves, pads, uniforms and punching bags that have won over the unemployed youths who dominate the club.
Baki said the support from Wemin brought confidence and pride to the youth boxers who were determined to represent the country in the 2015 Pacific Games and be a part of Team National Capital District.
He said they had to attend the National championships to be selected.
He said Socay, formerly the Hohola Youth Boxing Club, had produced many champions like internationals Junior Kauko, Henry Umings, Tom Boga, Chiko Emmanuel, Mackenzie Hiari and Alex Warogap in amateur boxing.
And a star in making is Roy Gavera, who has trained under Baki for some years and is in good form.
“There are a few potentials among the males and females that I am trying to groom to be good boxers in the future” Baki said.
