THE PNG Defence Force has a new commander and he is Col Francis Augwi.
Col Augwi replaces Commodore Peter Ilau, whose term has expired. Cmdr Ilau has completed a second term in office, but missed out on a third term.
The National Executive Council appointed Col Augwi in its final meeting for this year last week.
Government sources said Col Augwi was among three nominees for the defence top job. The others were Cmdr Ilau and Col Tokam Kanene, the Defence Attache in Indonesia.
Col Augwi was head of army intelligence prior to his promotion.
Col Kanene could not get the nod for the top job, but got the second best. He was appointed chief of staff, replacing Tom Urr.
Sources said the Prime Minister was expected to sign the instruments before leaving for Denmark.
