TEAM New Ireland are determined not to just make up the numbers as they look to win medals at the national amateur boxing championships in Port Moresby next week.
The side will be coached by a former boxer Francis Passingan who believes his fighters will be up for the challenge come Monday when the 4-day tournament starts.
Passingan said he was confident of his fighters bagging some medals. “My fighters have trained for more than one month so they are fit,” he said.
“We were preparing ourselves for the national championships that were scheduled to be held in Kokopo last month.
“But the tournament was shifted to Port Moresby and the extension has given the fighters more time to train and build on their condition.”
The team consist of seven fighters — six men and one woman.
The only female fighter is Jemimah Logarawa, from Kavieng, who will be competing in the welterweight (69kg) division.
The male fighters are Pais Takin (69kg), Woko Kume (75kg), Joshua Micah (81kg), Donald Sebulon (60kg), Malis Silas (81kg) and Jackson Meli, who will compete in the flyweight division. Micah and Meli are the only experienced fighters in the team. Micah competed at the 2015 national titles in Kavieng and Meli in a national title fight in Bougainville two years ago.
Twenty-year-old Sebolun said the tournament would be his first and that he was prepared to face any opponent.
“I will do what it takes to face any challenger who comes my way in the ring,” he said.
