New Ireland govt backing students to study overseas

NEW Ireland students who want to do post-graduate studies or study overseas can seek help from their provincial government.
Governor Sir Julius Chan said the provincial executive council (PEC) has approved new guidelines for spending on human resources.
“Under these guidelines, we will be able to provide the same level of tertiary subsidy support of K2500 to students who are accepted at overseas tertiary institutions,” he said.
“PEC has also reinstituted the post-graduate scholarship policy to support students who study mining engineering, deep sea marine engineering, environmental science, natural resources and petroleum and gas engineering.”
PEC hopes that students will return to take up employment with the New Ireland government.
The free and subsidised education policy was introduced in 2008 for students in elementary to grade 10. It subsidises 75 per cent of the fees for grades 11, 12 and for tertiary students also.
When the national government introduced tuition fee-free education in 2012, New Ireland continued to support its tertiary students.
