New Ireland rural areas light up
RURAL communities in New Ireland are being lit up with solar street lights as major road upgrading work run parallel under the provincial government’s works and infrastructure development initiatives.
Contractor JWK Ltd completed the installation of four new solar street lights (Amfar Primary School and Amfar Health Centre and two additional at Tanir High School) on Boeng Island on the Tanga group of islands on Friday.
Special projects officer Wesley Taram said so far, 50 lights were installed throughout Murat, Lavongai, Konoagil and Namatanai LLGs.
The next rollout of installations will be on the islands of Anir.
Meanwhile, on the mainland, road upgrading on the Lanzarotte Highway is progressing with positive feedback from locals.
The section between Lipek and Porpop is ready for sealing while the road contractor PNG SJ started work on the section between Lipek and the already sealed section at Rativis.
Liaison officer on the ground, Robin Pitili, said work is currently at Himau plantation drawing positive comments for the Governor Sir Julius Chan for picking up their pain over years of tolerating bad roads.
