THE ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of the K12 million New Ireland legislative assembly was held last Wednesday.
New Ireland Governor Sir Julius Chan said the assembly would be an important landmark for the province.
“New Ireland is becoming autonomous so we will call it the legislative assembly,” he said.
“This house is for leaders to come and make laws for good governance.
“More importantly, it will be for the future generations and for the public to come and see their representatives.”
On the ground floor will be the legislative assembly hall, three offices for the MPs, a chamber, offices for 10 presidents and a place for the people to come and observe the debates.
The top floor will have the office of the governor, deputy governor and the chairmen of various sectors.
“The new building will be respected and make all New Irelanders proud,” Sir Julius said.
It will be built by the China Railway Construction Group.
General manager Mei Hongliang said the company had a good record in the country with owners of buildings it built satisfied with the work.
The company will provide job opportunities for locals.
Economic and commercial counsellor at the Chinese embassy Liu Linlin said he hoped the Group’s management team could develop a good relationship with the local community.

  • Meanwhile rural communities still live below poverty line. What will such buildings do to people’s livelihoods?
I suggest the example of Enga Province must be followed by all provinces, that is, more funding for education, health sector and small medium enterprises.
Governor Sir Peter Ipatas does not live in a mansion in Enga but his Province is striving in all facets!
