A NEW 80-bed student dormitory for girls attending the Aiyura National High School was opened on Friday.
The dormitory valued at K1.5 million has 40 rooms with bunker beds, study tables with lights, ward robes and lockers.
Eastern Highlands deputy governor John Mipo, who opened the dormitory on behalf of Governor Peter Numu, committed K100,000 for the school this year and will allocate K500,000 in next year’s provincial budget to help the school in its infrastructural development.
Education Secretary Dr Uke Kombra commended the school management for giving priority to girls’ education as the new dormitory will cater for more girls to enroll to promote girls’ education empowerment.
“I encourage girls to think big and put every effort to get an education and be equal with their male counterparts,” he said.
He assured the school that the department will consider many options to support the school fund some of the projects that have to be completed.
Principal Karl Puluma said the dormitory is named Numu Dormitory after Governor Numu because the Governor’s office supported the project with K100,000 when the project ran out of money during the construction phase.
He thanked Steaford Amevo the contractor and Managing Director of Ramu Engineering Services Limited for delivering a brand new student dormitory.
