A SECTION of the new four-lane road between 5-Mile and Erima in Port Moresby built by Hebou Construction about eight months ago has collapsed.

The collapsed section is at the back of Ponderosa Hotel towards the Erima junction.

The road was initially contracted by the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) to Hebou for K30 million and was scheduled for opening this month but had collapsed.

Hebou project manager Lee Dever yesterday said: “The cause of that part of the road which collapsed happened over time from a leaking pipe that was running through the sustaining concrete wall.

“The wall is responsible for holding the soil which supports the road from underneath,” he said.

“The leaking pipe had allowed water to loosen the soil and the road to collapse.”

“At the moment we cannot do anything since NCDC has told us to wait until further instructions to carry out repair work.”

Dever said they could repair the road within three months.

NCDC road authorities could not be reached for comment.
