A NEW market for the residents of Port Moresby costing K4.7 million has been opened in the suburb of Tokarara.
National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop said it was to replace the market razed in 1994.
“Since 1994 when the market was burnt, we did not build another market. Your patience is appreciated,” he said.
He said City Hall had wanted a bigger market but land was the problem.
“A market is the pathway of our people and it is also part of our culture,” he said.
City manager Bernard Kipit said the market was partly funded by the district service improvement programme.
“The Tokarara market cost K4.7 million. The DSIP (account for) around K1.3 million,” he said.
Parkop urged small and medium enterprises owners to start their businesses in the new facility.
He said the market would have “zero tolerance on violence”.
City Hall is also planning to open the Six-Mile SME incubation market.

  • The materials used in building up this market cost about K1.5 million if you can estimate it carefully. The contractor is politically linked to Powes Pakop and is making million profits out of it. Hope Pakop does not get his share of 10% from this profit.

  • Please NCD can you people see to it that some sellers occupy more spaces than others, especially those people from the Highlands regions. Some of these people have several spaces from different market locations, like Koki, Gordens, Boroko, and Sabama, selling their products brought in from their provinces outside POM and suffer the Motuan people from selling their garden produce. This is very disappointing and unfair. Hon. MPs – Governor PP, MM, JC & JK please do something about this.

  • Market alone cost K4.7 million???? Maybe 3 – 4 public markets will be reasonable for that amount.

  • That’s what business all bout Uncle Glop, time to taking over, its better now for you uncle to complain on issue of Asian taking over where PNG Government is trying remove them. Fellow PNGan struggling to rise, lets support them, not suppress them with negative mind set….

  • I don’t think the building would cost that much it would be 400’000.00 because we have LEON HARDWEAR and IDEAL HARDWEAR to buy cheaper building materials. I don’t think it will last 10 years.

  • I would only appreciate work done, whether by Previous or current Government. As long as work is done.If work is done forget about investigation. We want to see least developments happening all across the country.
