INMATES at Buimo prison no longer need to go to a public hospital to receive treatment with a new medical centre to be built in the jail compound.

Buimo prison commander Supt Judy Tara said there had been so many instances of prisoners escaping from public hospitals. This should no longer be a problem with the new medical facility inside the prison.

The medical facility will have a bathroom, procedure room, consulting room, storage room for medical supplies and pharmaceutical products, plus two men’s and ladies’ wards with six beds each.

Qualified medical staff will man it.

“The medical center will allow prisoners to remain within the prison boundary where it is more secure rather than taking them to the hospital where it is open and there is no proper security to prevent escapes which happen many times,” Tara said.

The centre is being built for free by Hardware Haus Ltd through its subsidiary KwikBuilt in Lae.

Chief executive officer Richard McGuinness said the company was contracted by the provincial government through Lae MP Loujaya Toni to build a three-bedroom duplex and a single quarter dormitory for CS officers.

He decided to throw in the medical centre for free because he saw that the prison needed one.
