THREE international institutes are working to provide an opportunity for a Papua New Guinean to be awarded a scholarship to undertake a doctorate in medical research.

The Nossal Institute for Global Health, University of Melbourne and International SOS (ISOS) have collaborated to sponsor a Papua New Guinean to undertake studies in relation to public health in PNG.

ISOS will be sponsoring the scholarship under the Nossal Scholars Programme for the successful candidate to undertake graduate research degrees in medicine, dentistry and health science at the University of Melbourne.

The programme will provide A$30,000 per year for three and half years which will cover living expenses, international travel and field work. The University of Melbourne will provide full fee remission for the length of the scholarship.

It is expected that the successful candidate will travel to the University of Melbourne for the first year of study, will return to PNG for field work in the second year and will complete their PhD thesis in Melbourne.

ISOS regional managing director Michael Gardner said: “We are extremely pleased to be supporting the scholarship and further contributing to public health in Papua New Guinea.

“ISOS will not have any involvement in the selection or supervision of the candidate, but we may be able to facilitate field work at one of the sites where we deliver health services in PNG.”

Applications will close on Feb 28, 2014. For details, visit: http://research.mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/nossal-scholars-png.
