THE Institute of Business Studies in Port Moresby will start its 2013 schools debate competition next week with the inclusion of new provinces.

IBS school debate chairman Gordon Haipaku said the programme began with eight schools in the National Capital District.

“Provinces that have since joined include East New Britain, Enga, Milne Bay, Eastern Highlands, Jiwaka, Western and Gulf,” Haipaku said.

IBS debate coordinator Vani Davis said this was the fifth year of the competition with schools from 12 provinces participating.

“The programme has been successful throughout the years with the continuous support of NCD Governor Powes Parkop and other stakeholders,” Davis said.

Parkop has pledged K50,000 for this year’s competition, saying the debate had become a national programme.

“I appeal to governors of other provinces, including Hela and Jiwaka, to join in supporting our children develop and enhance their learning capacity at an early age,” Parkop said.

“Apart from promoting their schools, the students are developing their research and oratory skills which are vital in all professional fields of work.”

Meanwhile, a Grade 11 student from last year’s champion Jubilee Catholic Secondary School in NCD, James Lunge, said he gained exposure and from doing research.

He also understands social issues affecting the young population today.
