IT will now be much easier to access the Port Moresby Nature Park with the completion of the work on the nearby road allowing vehicles to make a U-turn directly in front of the park’s entrance.
It is part of a plan by the National Capital District Commission (NCDC) to improve road safety and traffic flow along the Goro Kaeaga Road at Rainbow.
Previously, vehicles trying to access the Nature Park were required to drive past it and make a U-turn at the front of Port Moresby National High School further down the road.
Port Moresby Nature Park’s general manager Michelle McGeorge thanked NCDC, Curtain Bros and Cardno for upgrading the section of the road.
She said they had been discussing the road safety issue, especially for school children visiting the park, for some time.
McGeorge said her biggest concern had been the safety of school groups travelling in buses to the Nature Park. The buses had to make U-turns at a narrow part of the road further down.
She said the new right-hand turn would ensure the safety of more than 18,000 school children visiting the park this year.
It is part of the park’s structured school excursion programmes. Tourists and locals also visit the park.
