New road gives hopes to Boikin mothers

FOR more than a decade, people at Boikin in East Sepik carry their cargo and walk with lamps at night to the main highway to catch transport to Wewak town.
But, according to Wewak district women’s president Florence Parinjo, this will be a thing of the past with the opening of a road in the Boikin local level government.
“Boikin inland people need such services,” she said.
Parinjo thanked Wewak MP Kevin Isifu for realising their need.
“Now mothers won’t have to walk at nights with bilum on their heads to take produce to the highway. In the past it takes us an hour to walk to Banak to catch a PMV to town,” Parinjo said.
Former councillor for Wewak Urban Carol Kovingre said the road had been neglected for ages.
The eight-kilometre road was built at a cost of K400,000.
Isifu, who is also the Inter Government Relations Minister, said having the road opened up other development opportunities and services, and boost economic activities in the district.
National Planning Minister Richard Maru, who was at the Banak-Wautogig road opening, also said Wewak port would be relocated to Hawain.
