New road law criticised

Letters

I am writing about the Road Traffic Authority and the new road laws that have recently come into force.
Media reports show the Motor Traffic Act is a cut-and-paste job from New Zealand or somewhere else. The charges and fines are excessive.
Do you honestly think increasing fines will prevent accidents and traffic offences? I doubt it.
What is wrong with our current Motor Traffic Act? I believe it just needs amending with the change in time, technology, social and economic factors.
Why repeal it??Why change something when it is perfectly functioning.
Also, is the RTA Act law? The answer is no.
I have done my bit of research and found out that the RTA Act is not law and has only gone as far as the second reading.
Why is the RTA management trying to impose and force the people of PNG to abide by the Act?
For provinces that have setup traffic registries, mind you RTA is here to replace you.
I for one, a vehicle owner will have to dig deeper now for registration, safety sticker, licence and the list goes on.
I’m calling on the vehicle owners, PMV and taxi operators and general public to lobby against the RTA Act.
This is also a callout to the Transport department to shed some light on these issue.
Over to you Mr Secretary.
