THE Fly River provincial government has bought three sets of Caterpillar Construction equipment for road building costing K8.6 million.
The purchase of the equipment from Hastings Deering PNG last week is the first such buy in the Government’s 30-year history.
Western province Governor Bob Danaya presented the cheque to Hastings Deering PNG last week.
Dr Danaya said Hastings Deering would supply three sets of road construction equipment to each of the three districts of South Fly, Middle Fly and North Fly districts.
“This is the first time since the introduction of the provincial government system that we are spending big to buy a dedicated fleet of equipment for road building and maintenance.
“As governor, I have recognised the importance of a good road transport network which has been lacking since independence. Road building will open opportunities for the people of Western province for economic advancement,” he said.
With the purchase of the equipment, it would go a long way in improving service delivery to the people of Western province, he said.
“As part of the equipment sale, Hastings Deering Institute of Training will partner with the Government to undertake a comprehensive training programme for operators and mechanics.
“Western province has a total lack of quality road pavement materials, particularly in the south and middle part of the province.
“We have plans to repair and build roads, and to stabilise the soil,” he said.
