THE Kama Seventh-day Adventist church congregation in Goroka, Eastern Highlands, opened a new K4 million church building last Sunday.

The building was officially opened by Pastor Barry Oliver, president of the SDA South Pacific Division.

More than 3000 people attended the event, including SDA PNG Union Mission general secretary Ps Blassius Managos, Eastern Highlands-Chimbu Mission president Ps Benny Soga, Central Papua Conference president Ps Kove Tau and Eastern-Highlands Chimbu Mission general secretary Ps Zuzae Hizoke.

Oliver, who is based in Sydney, Australia, flew into Goroka from Port Moresby, where he was attending a theological seminar at the Pacific Adventist University.

He said the church building would be a place for worship to prepare Christians for the second coming of Jesus.

Barry said the church would be opened to anyone who was seeking God. Elder Matthew Omena, a long time layman at the church, said work on the building started in 2012 and was completed last December.

“This building was built on freewill offering given by church members,” Omena said.

“We did not do any fundraising or solicit money from politicians.”

Omena said the building was designed by LAicos Architects and was constructed by PNG Construction.  Omena said the state-of-the-art sound system in the building was installed by Rabone Systems of Brisbane, Australia.

“The building can cater for more than 1000 people at a single time,” Omena said.
