PUBLISHING a resource book for educational purposes brings enlightenment and joy.
Many sees it as a milestone achievement. For IBS University, the launching of the book titled PNG Taxation on Thursday, July 16, 2020, is part of the IBS vision of “enriching lives through world class education, training and research”.
The book launching was indeed an achievement not only for IBS University and the author Joseph Palimi, but for all who have contributed to successfully having the book published. The book focuses on the tax administration and practices in Papua New Guinea, specifically in the area of income tax with a perspective into the taxation system.
It is a great guide for students and professional practitioners alike.
With the greater need for more taxpayer awareness in the country, the book aims to educate Papua New Guineans about taxation issues.
Chief guest at the launching, Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) Director for Learning and Development Thomas Magiuli was delighted to officiate at the event in the presence of students, staff and invited guests.
Magiuli was privileged to share the podium with IBSU chancellor Gabriel Pepson, Vice-Chancellor Dr Ramachandran Arunachalam and pro Vice-Chancellor Dr Chenniappan Murugesan.
In his keynote address, Magiuli thanked IBS founder and chairman Sir Mick Nades for his vision and foresight in establishing a reputable institution that has a very high standard and quality infrastructures. Magiuli outlined the importance of PNG Taxation, saying it will have a great impact in educational learning and practices through knowledge empowerment.
Representatives from other tertiary institutions in the country, staff of IRC and relevant organisations were present among the other invited guests to witness the book launching.
Author Joseph Palimi embarked on a journey in collaboration with IBS University’s vision of ‘enriching lives through world class education’, realised the importance of updating the knowledge on tax administration and practices in Papua New Guinea, especially in the area of income tax.
Palimi’s vast experience in the field of accounting, doing major research works for international and national projects, and management skills has enabled him to effectively compile the taxation book based on the context of Papua New Guinea.
The launching of the book was well acknowledged and recognised by IBS including the Southern Cross University, Australia. The academic staff and students of IBS University appreciate the contribution and development of the knowledge on tax systems in the country.
PNG Taxation is an addition to the existing textbook already published by IBS University, titled Business Law in Papua New Guinea, by Dr Virgil Narokobi, basically to enhance students learning in the field of taxation.
“The target readers for the book are mainly students and staff of tertiary institutions like IBS University, University of PNG, Divine Word University, Pacific Adventist University, University of Technology and the University of Goroka. Career users like accounting technicians and consultants will also find it resourceful,” Palimi said.
PNG Taxation aims to update readers about the income tax laws and practices that have been changing consistently overtime due to the enactment of new taxation or related legislations, and including the annual national budget passed in Parliament every year.
PNG Taxation was published with the support from IBS University. Relevant information was also extracted from the book Taxation in PNG, authored by Edgar O’Neil, who had given his permission for UPNG and IBS to use the textbook.
PNG Taxation also contains information extracted from the Internal Revenue Commission (IRC) and Price Waterhouse Coopers’ (PwC) online websites.
Joseph Palimi holds a Master of Business Administration qualification from the Sheffield University, United Kingdom and is a certified practicing accountant (CPA) in both PNG and Australia. He also holds a Bachelor of Business (Finance) Degree from Deakin University – Australia and Bachelor of Arts in Commerce from UPNG.
Prior to completing the book PNG Taxation Palimi has contributed a chapter of the world-renowned book Springer published by Pittsburg University.
