A TRAINING facility was opened in Lae last week by South Pacific International Container Services Inc (SPICTSI) aimed at developing human resource, according to the company’s chief executive officer Robert Maxwell.
He said having such facility depicted SPICTSI’s commitment to investing in human resource development.
“We value training for our people and to ensure people are trained, we have to have good facilities and equipment so that people are trained to world standards,” Maxwell said.
The new training facility at the SPICTSI’s base in Lae was refurbished at a cost of K150,000 and was equipped with a K300,000 simulator (a sophisticated hardware and software machine) which trainee operators used for their tutorial activities.
The software in the simulator can be programmed into different scenarios to help the trainees in their learning and apply in the actual workplace.
He said at the moment the facility was catering for engineering and operator training which had seen 20 people graduating with certificates after completing a year’s training on crane operations and another 20 in engineering.
“We are having a vision that in the future this centre for excellence will be bigger than it is today to cater not only for these two training programmes but also other programmes such as accounting, procumbent and others.”
He said the centre of excellence in the future would offer curriculum on different units and eventually include other educational bodies such as the National Training Council, universities and technical schools.
“Finally, we are aiming that the scope of the training we will be providing here in the future will be much more than just an operator.”
SPICTSI managing director George Gware said the launching of the centre of excellence had opened up a new opportunity for young people.
“Into the future, SPICTSI is aiming to recruit more women to have gender balance, especially in these areas where men are involved initially,” Gware said.
