AN amendment to the constitution of the Evangelical Lutheran church of Papua New Guinea (ELC-PNG) will be tabled at this week’s synod of the church to make provision for the establishment of a Lutheran university.
The acting head bishop of ELC-PNG Rev Zau Rapa told Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare that it was important for the amendment to be made as there was no provision in the current constitution to provide for the church’s involvement in tertiary education.
Rev Rapa said he was pleased with the support from Sir Michael for a Lutheran university to be established and hoped the synod would make this happen.
The establishment of the university is one of many important decisions to be made by the synod this week.
The others include the adoption of the church’s policy on HIV/AIDS and the election of a new head bishop, assistant head bishop and church general-secretary.
Rev Rapa said he was also pleased that the church and the Government had signed a memorandum of understanding to be partners in development.
