CHIMBU, Hela, Enga and East New Britain are expected to have new wards and local level governments (LLGs) before the next LLG elections in 2024, an official says.
Department of Provincial and Local Level Government Affairs acting secretary Joseph Warus said the four provinces had met the requirement to have new wards and LLGs.
“Their submission to create new wards and LLGs have met the requirements under the Organic Law on provincial and Local Level Government,” he said.
Warus said the number of ward areas and LLGs were going to increase once the National Executive Councils approved the submission.
Currently, there are 6,375 wards and 331 LLGs in the country. He said the submission for the four provinces were now with the Central Agency Coordination Committee before it goes to executive council.
