NEWCREST Mining Lihir says safety is its priority, and this was reinforced through a variety of activities conducted last week to celebrate the National Mining Safety Week.
Newcrest Lihir mining operation in New Ireland kick started the National Mining Safety Week (NMSW) last Monday with a safety campaign.
The NMSW is a biannual event set by the Mineral Resources Authority to promote and remind the mining workforce across PNG about the importance of maintaining safety work cultures.
The national theme was “Getting back to basics in risk management”.
Newcrest Lihir’s safety campaign was focused on its basic risk management practices that continue to ensure all Newcrest employees and contractors work and go home safely every day.
The campaign carried sub-themes to encourage safety leaders and influencers, remind the workforce of critical lifesaving controls, empower the workforce to appreciate the effectiveness of residual critical controls and build a culture of efficient risk management.
Lihir mine general manager Peter Sharpe said the event served as a timely safety reminder for the company’s workforce.
Sharpe said the event was also an opportunity for the business to reflect on Lihir’s safety and sustainability journey.
“Our journey focuses on creating a brighter future for people through safe, sustainable, innovative and responsible mining,” he said.
Lihir’s safety campaign activities were in line with the national Covid-19 control measures and Newcrest Covid-19 lifesaving behaviours.
The activities included safety leadership videos and stories, daily word-search and selfie video competitions and a critical control challenge.
