NATIONAL Fisheries Authority (NFA) have secured their placing for the grand finals in the premier division of Public Servants women’s netball competition after defeating Telikom 18-17 in an evenly-contested clash at the Rita Flynn Courts.
NFA’s sharp goal attack and veteran Gilean Ole made sure that their catch of the day will be huge to secure their first grand final spot after being elevated to the premier division only this season.
Ole slotted in 13 crucial goals while her shooter Pauline Parker managed to register five goals to see them pip Telikom at the final whistle.
Telikom shoot off to a flying start in the first half, with goal shooter Mary Gumia’s personal haul of 10 goals and Ann Dobini cheaping in with seven goals.
Telikom were looking to secure another grand finals appearance with a handy 9-7 lead at the half time as centre Alice Andrew and Gewa Raula took control of their attack from all fronts.
But they failed to build on the momentum when it mattered most as their rivals stepped up another gear in the second stanza with NFA captain Ole taking control of the proceedings.
Telikom will now face inform Finance Department in next weekend’s semi-finals to decide the winners, who will meet NFA in the grand final in the following weekend.
In another do-or-die match luckless National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) bowed out from finals contention after they were mercilessly thrown out by determined Finance Department 24-14.
In division one, Works Department lived for another day after dumping Didimeri 19-15, while in division two, Labour Department survived a strong fight back from PNG Power to run out 24-23 winners.
