THE New Guinea Islands region now has a new crime unit to investigate regional fraud and narcotics.
Police Commissioner Tom Kulunga officiated the setting up of the unit in Kokopo at the police headquarters last Friday.
Kulunga thanked New Crest Mining Ltd for donating the facilities that houses the new unit.
He said these facilities would greatly assist operations of the unit in the region.
He challenged the business community throughout the nation to identify areas that were lacking in their communities and address them.
“If this can be done by this particular mining company then I am sure other mining companies and business houses can also do the same,” he said.
Kulunga said fighting crime in partnership with other stakeholders would always go a long way in ensuring law and order was maintained in the country.
“Police cannot fight crime alone,” he said.
He said many activities that police were involved in were community policing, adding it was better for all stakeholders including communities to assist the force in any way.
He urged the officers working under the unit to look after the facilities to be able to serve the region “efficiently and effectively”.
“The trend in this country is that we sing and dance to open new developments but we can never maintain them and that is a challenge we must take on.”
New Crest occupational health, safety and security manager Dennis Cowan said the company was proud to support the PNG Royal Constabulary.
