CHILDREN are keen to exercise their rights and participate actively in development when they know their rights.

Divine Word University (DWU) journalism lecturer Br Michael McManus made the statement at the presentation of the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organisation DWU Communication and Development Award to a non-governmental organisation involved children’s rights on May 3.

“Children’s knowledge of their own rights, according to the articles of the Constitution on the Rights of Children (CRC), gives them a sense of urgency to participate in their own development as well as the development of families, schools and communities,” McManus said.

McManus commended Live & Learn, a non-government organisation who received this year’s award.

The Kimbe-based organisation was recognised for their efforts in using media to address children’s rights and issues.

He described the work of Live & Learn as something unique and one that has changed lives.

Meanwhile, Live & Learn training and capacity building officer Marlene Delis said the organisation was proud but humbled to receive the award.

“The award is a bonus for children in Papua New Guinea, and we are encouraged to encourage children use media positively,” she said.

She also thanked Unesco and the DWU for recognising the efforts of Live & Learn in empowering children.
