TURUBU local level government in East Sepik has established a relationship with WaterAid PNG to deliver water and sanitation services to its 21 ward areas.

LLG president David Kausik said four villages in Turubu were already benefiting from the services as World Water Day was marked in Wewak last Friday.

Kausik said he was working with WaterAid to have other areas covered.

“Did you wash this morning? The seller out there in the market needs water to mix cordial for her customers, you need water to cook food, no one can survive without water,” were some of the phrases Kausik used to define the importance of water.

“I want to thank our partners WaterAid, Oxfam and Help Resources for partnering with government to deliver this basic necessity of life,” he said.

The deputy chairman of Wewak joint district planning and budget priorities committee said access to clean water and proper sanitation were crucial. Without them people were forced to rely on unsafe sources of water which increased risks for preventable, communicable diseases.

He said Oxfam and Help Resources were also helping to deliver water and sanitation projects to other LLG areas in the district.
