THE Lae Tennis Club’s nightly competition is making its mark at the Lae Golf Club tennis courts with eight teams taking part, according to president Glen Cabasug.
He told The National that the division-A teams were Bismark Maritime, Chemcare Group, Panamex Pacific Ltd and Warrior Aquastrong while Lae Biscuit Company, Oracle Pacific, Prima Smallgoods and RD Tuna Canners were in division-B.
“There are four players in each team, so we see a total of 32 players with more than 10 reserves for the different levels,” Cabasug said.
“There is one junior in division-A (14-year-old LJ Domalaon) and two in division-B (14-year-old Roberta Mark and 15-year-old Nathan Yagum).
“We’re targeting more juniors for more exposure and training in our next team tournament.
“LJ Domalaon started in division-B in our previous tournaments, and is already now playing in division-A.
“Each team across both divisions will play each other in two round-robin matches.”
Cabasug said division-A and division-B matches were played every Monday and Tuesday respectively with the grand finals to be contested by the top-two teams in each category after all the round-robin matches.
“The grand finals are scheduled for June 4,” he said.
“We thank Phil Hommelhoff and the Lae Golf Club for supporting our tournaments.”
Cabasug said scheduled for this year were the continuation of free junior coaching, two team tournaments, two singles tournaments, two junior tournaments and the Lae Open Tennis Championships.
“We have not had a standard singles tournament in more than 20 years, and we have scheduled three this year,” he said.
“This is intended to encourage Lae players to a more competitive level, provide much needed exposure for our Lae juniors, and attract Port Moresby players to provide the needed challenge for our Lae players to aspire to.
“I am happy with strong support coming from PNG Tennis, Lae Golf Club, Lae Chinese Club, corporate sponsors, organising committee members, players, juniors and parents. We continue to share our activities and pictures through email, flyers and the social media.”
