NINE prisoners have been recaptured since the jail breakout at Beon last month.

Beon jail commander Tita Wada thanked members of the public for assisting the warders and police in encouraging the escapees to surrender.

One escapee surrendered to police on Sunday morning. He said so far only nine of the 49 escapees were back in the prison compound.

“Five were recaptured as a result of police and CS operations, two surrendered and one was caught by police,” he said.

One escapee who was recaptured and detained at the Jomba cells has gone missing again. It is reported that a policeman on duty that night sent him to the market.

A team from Port Moresby is in the province to investigate the escape from the maximum security prison.

Acting executive officer to the CS Commissioner, John Timothy who is part of the investigating team said their final report was still “in its draft form”.
