THE rugby 7s competition in the 2017 BSP PNG Games started yesterday with nine provinces participating.
The provinces had been slotted into three pools in the men’s category and one pool in the women’s competition.
Hosts WNB are in pool A with Central and Southern Highlands, Pool B is made up 2014 gold medallist Morobe, East New Britain and Milne Bay while silver medallist in the 2014 games AROB are in pool C with Madang and Northern.
In the women’s competition, four provinces are taking part — hosts West New Britain, Morobe, Autonomous Region of Bougainville and Southern Highlands.
Competition manager for rugby 7s Paul Joseph told The National that 10 provinces should be taking part in the games but unfortunately Eastern Highlands could not make it to Kimbe.
According to Joseph the women’s matches would be played in a round-robin format as they have one pool. After the pool matches teams placed first and second will play for the gold while third and fourth will play for the bronze.
Meanwhile, the day two games will start at 1pm today with the women’s matches.
